Capitol Heels Report: March 6, 2020
A Note from President & CEO Melanie R. Bridgeforth
As an organization with a core mission of social change and improving the lives of others, our hearts are heavy given the already devasting impact and loss of life caused by coronavirus (COVID-19).
On behalf of The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham, I want to share more about how we as an organization are responding to the ongoing and evolving COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on our work together. We want to stay current, committed, and caring in all that we do.
But, like you, we remain hopeful and steadfast in our belief that our community and country can and will overcome this together.
The health and safety of our team is of the utmost importance. Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, all members of our team will work from home until further notice. While the physical office is closed for in-person meetings, team members remain available by phone, email, and Zoom. Our business activities will continue with as little disruption as possible, including making all planned payments and related operations, finalizing research projects, and keeping well-informed of any and all legislative activities related to our 2020 Agenda for Women.
Our mission will continue, simply carried out in a different way. In accordance with public health guidance, we are postponing in-person events until further notice. This includes canceling our 2020 legislative day, Capitol Heels, originally scheduled for April 2.
The pandemic has underscored once again how access to supports like paid leave, affordable health and child care, and family-friendly workplace policies is critical for all Alabama families.
We remain resolute in our efforts to advocate for systems changes that create equitable pathways to opportunity and look forward to providing continued updates on this front.
The state legislature is currently on spring break. If and when they reconvene, we will resume monitoring legislative activity and issues affecting women and their families.
Although we have not yet publicized our 2020 Clearing the Path event, we know many of you look forward to this opportunity to hear highlights from our annual research publication and engage in a community dialogue. We are considering postponing the event until early summer and will keep you apprised of our decision as plans develop.
For our community grantee partners, we want to emphasize that while COVID-19 is affecting your work and your organization, we are flexible, supportive, and here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jacob Smith, Grants and Research Director, with questions or concerns as you navigate these challenging times.
In times of uncertainty, people and communities are our greatest assets. Each of us can make a difference by treating each other with respect, consideration, and kindness.
