The U.S. Senate passed a strong, bipartisan bill to renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) on February 12, 2013. Unfortunately, the substitute bill introduced by House leadership on Friday, February 22, 2013 fails to adequately support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and it leaves out a number of critical provisions that are needed to ensure that victims have access to much-needed services and support.

Contact Rep. Bachus today! Here’s how:

Call the Capitol switchboard at 888.269.5702 and ask the operator to connect you to Representative Bachus. When you’re connected to the office, tell the person who answers the phone:

I am a constituent from (city and state) and my name is _________.

I am calling to ask Representative Bachus to do three things:

VOTE:

YES on the RULE to vote on VAWA today, Wednesday February 27, 2013

NO on the House substitute amendment to VAWA, Thursday, February 28, 2013

YES on the Senate-passed version of VAWA, Thursday, February 28, 2013

To learn more about VAWA or to view this information as PDF that you can share with your friends, click here.

The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham announces its 2012 grants, awarding eight non-profit organizations with a total of $140,390 to improve women’s economic security in Greater Birmingham. This marks a 75% increase in grants awarded by The Women’s Fund from last year. Balch and Bingham LLP hosted a ceremony honoring the grantee recipients on January 15.

Recipients are:

Alabama Partnership for Children’s TEACH Early Childhood Scholarship program ($25,000) that gives scholarships to 10 single women working in the early care and education field. All recipients will receive guaranteed wage increases from their employer (2%) after their first 9 credit hours are complete.

Childcare Resources’ job readiness and childcare program ($25,000) that provides residents of Pathways with formal Office Management and Microsoft Office training at Jefferson State Community College and participating in the course will receive subsidized childcare from Childcare Resources.

Children’s Aid Society’s Project Independence ($16,000) that provides economic support (case management, childcare, transportation, work incentives/rewards) to homeless young mothers ages 16-22 and their children to stabilize their family and move them into higher wage jobs.

Cornerstone School’s support for childcare and education ($24,390) to provide 12 single moms enrolled in either higher education or job training with tuition assistance for their children during 2013 school year.

Gateway’s Going for the Gold program ($10,000) that provides one-on-one debt management to assess a client’s financial situation and determine a plan to pay off debt, negotiate directly with creditors to lower interest, etc. and begin a monthly repayment plan.

Impact Alabama’s SaveFirst program ($10,000) that trains college students to provide free tax preparation services to low-income Alabamians, primarily women, and ensures their receipt of tax deductions and refunds such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church Community Support Corporation’s childcare program ($10,000) that provides access to daycare and out of school time care for single women with children 12 and under enrolled in job training and higher education institutions, including Jeremiah’s Hope Academy at St. Vincent’s, Lawson State Community College, and Birmingham City Schools’ Drop Out Recovery program

The Salvation Army’s Keys to Success Program ($20,000) assisting working single women and their children with obtaining permanent housing from the private rental market through credit repair, utility deposit assistance, and rental deposit assistance of an average of $3000 total per family served.

Jeanne Jackson, President and CEO of The Women’s Fund, explained that the Fund’s collaborative efforts are based on feedback from community listening sessions and data presented in the Fund’s new report, Stepping Up for Women’s Economic Security. “We heard over and over that a variety of factors must align – childcare, job training, transportation, housing– for a woman to successfully attain higher wages.”

“Thanks to The Women’s Fund our young moms will now have more access to childcare and other resources that will allow them to put more of their earned money into savings” noted Christie Mac Segars, Children’s Aid Society.

Joan Wright with Childcare Resources says, “We believe strongly in the thought that together we are stronger than any of us individually.”
